A's mother requested a cowl ages ago. I've had it in the back of my mind for a while, hoping she'd forget, hoping I wouldn't have to make it. She asked about it this week *gulp*. She wants it to be... football themed *shudder*.
It's not just the football that concerns me, it's the pattern. She saw my kitty camera strap cover and requested the same in a scarf. I didn't think the pattern would work back and forth so as a compromise I offered her a cowl. I'm pretty sure this is going to be as stiff as buggery. So here we have the begginings of a tapestry crochet cowl. Well, I haven't started the tapestry part yet. I'm compromising by doing a few stripes on the bottom and top, so there's less of the tapestry part. Stripes are very footbally anyway.
I'm using some yarn I picked up in the BWM bargain room. The white is quite nice but the blue seems a bit scratchy. Stiff and scratchy, wow this is going to be so nice around someone's neck.

P.S. Now I have this song in my head.

I've always wondered about crochet for projects like that because of the stiffness of the resulting fabric. I'm sure that you'll make it work and give your mother the perfect cowl! I would write more but I have a cat sleeping on my dominant arm, I'm sure you can sympathize
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised you wrote anything at all given your predicament!
DeleteThis cowl will be warm in the sense that it will block the wind, and every single other element certainly! I'm interested to see if it has any flexibility at all! LOL
could you crochet using a bigger hook? maybe give the fabric somemore drape? Just a thought - I love the colours together. Good luck and have a creative wednesday xx
ReplyDeleteI considered that, but I'm worried the tapestry will be loose and not neat, because the stitches do need to stick together. I'm using 4.5mm and it's actually not as bad as I thought!
DeleteMaybe the yarn will fell less scratchy after a wash or two? Hang in there! You might be positively surprised from the result!
ReplyDeleteit's not as bad when worked up actually, it doesn't feel scratchy at all. i reseve my judgement to the finish.
DeleteOoooh I'm looking forward to seeing this one finished! Love the blue yarn. Such a high wool content yarn can be scratchy. If you figure out a way to get it to soften up, let me know :) I hadn't heard that song in years by the way, I had the album on cassette...I feel old now lol Have a great day! Elisabeth x
ReplyDeleteit has less wool than the white! and i thought the silk content would help.
Deletewould you believe I bought this without touchig it? just bought the whole packet! LOL what a sucker!
Stripes are very football-u. Maybe after a soak it'll soften up? I hope it works out!
ReplyDeleteGood luck wit the cowl!
ReplyDeleteHere's my WIP: http://mibruno.com/en-proceso-83/
That's quite a predicament. I second the suggestion of a larger hook for drape. Soaking it in wool wash or hair conditioner might help with the scratchiness but that would have to be done every time it's washed.
ReplyDeleteI think the pattern could look really cool when it's finished though - *I* certainly wouldn't mind a kitty cowl! ~_^ And at least the colours are not overly football-y; my entire extended family either goes for the Eagles (gold and blue) or the Dockers (purple, green, and white) - so if anything is made in those particular colours it is assumed to be related to football >_<
ReplyDeleteNavy and blue.. Geelong! and with kitties so i think it's going to be pretty cool for a football fan.
DeleteI was just about to type my suggestion but it's the same as Vicki's. Maybe sizing up your hook would lessen the stiffness factor? Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteRegardless to what you do, I can't wait to see the F.O.
